Keyboard Tester is an online keyboard testing tool built for anyone who needs to check whether their keyboard is working correctly. Whether you're troubleshooting a dead key, verifying a new mechanical keyboard before the return window closes, or testing 25 office keyboards in a row, the tester gives you instant, accurate results in your browser.
The tester detects every keypress in real time using the browser's native KeyboardEvent API and displays it on a virtual keyboard layout. It supports Windows, Mac, and Mobile layouts, detects left and right modifier keys separately, and includes a heatmap that tracks your key usage patterns. You can also simulate mechanical switch sounds (Linear, Tactile, Clicky) and view a live key press log with event codes for each key.
Every feature runs entirely on your device. No keystrokes are sent to a server, stored in a database, or logged anywhere.
Most keyboard testers online do one thing: light up a key when you press it. That's useful, but it's not enough when you're diagnosing ghosting, checking N-key rollover, or trying to figure out if a problem is hardware or software. We built Keyboard Tester to be the tool we wanted when testing our own keyboards — fast, accurate, feature-complete, and private by default.
Keyboard Tester is used by everyday users checking a faulty key, gamers testing anti-ghosting before a tournament, mechanical keyboard builders verifying switches after a solder job or QMK/VIA flash, IT support teams testing hardware in bulk, and developers who need JavaScript key codes for input handling. The tool is built to serve all of these use cases without requiring an install, an account, or a download.
Keyboard Tester runs on a Node.js backend with a lightweight frontend built on vanilla JavaScript and custom CSS. All keyboard detection happens client-side using standard browser APIs. The site is secured with Helmet (CSP, HSTS, X-Frame-Options), compressed with gzip, and rate-limited to prevent abuse. No third-party tracking scripts run on the page beyond what is required for ad serving.
We keep the tech stack simple and the codebase lean because a keyboard tester should load fast and work immediately, not wait for frameworks to initialize.
Keyboard Tester will always be accessible without a paywall, an account wall, or a download requirement. We don't collect personal data, we don't track keystrokes, and we don't sell user information. The tool exists to do one job well: tell you whether your keyboard works.
